For folks who came of age in the ’90s and early 2000s, chunky highlights à la Rachel Green from Friends were all the rage. Forget the seamless balayage that’s popular today — the look was unapologetically bold and purposely non-blended. Over the years, the hair-color trend has resurfaced in the form of nostalgia-inducing recreations on Instagram, but most recently, Kim Kardashian surprised everyone by sporting the retro look in her new KKW Beauty Mattes campaign.
The 38-year-old makeup and media mogul debuted the ’90s-inspired look on Instagram when she announced her new Mattes Collection. In the campaign photos, her dark brown hair features chunky, lighter brown highlights reminiscent of the iconic time period — and if that wasn’t enough, she also wears a choker and a brown-toned lipstick from the collection called 90’s Chic.
The mastermind behind Kim K.’s throwback highlights? That would be celebrity hairstylist Andrew Fitzsimons, who also frequently works with sisters Khloé and Kourtney Kardashian, and Kylie Jenner.
“The color was inspired by ’90s supermodels, so we referenced photos that featured hair with very beautiful, very ’90s chunky, sandy, blonde highlights against contrasting brown lowlights,” Fitzsimons tells Allure via email. He explains that he wanted to modernize and elevate the style by using less competitive tones and an ombré effect. “The base tone is a beautiful neutral brown with cool beige highlights,” he adds.
Naturally, legions of fans commented on the look, leaving messages on Fitzsimons’s post like, “It’s time for chunks to come back in a modern way,” and, “Make a tutorial on this please.”
We must say: We would love a tutorial, too, Andrew.
